The course continues Latin study in the second year. We read Cicero's First Catilinarian oration and portions of Sallust's Bellum Catilinae. These works have a common theme: the tumultuous year 63 BCE, when a disgruntled and impoverished Roman aristocrat, L. Sergius Catilina, attempted to overthrow the Roman government. They are also well-suited for second-year Latin study in their level of difficulty, and Sallust and Cicero together form a remarkable contrast in Latin prose style. Read in conjunction, they give a fair idea of the richness of Latin literature.

Course Requirements
Regular attendance is necessary for successful completion of this course. Attendance records are kept, and attendance and participation make up one component in the calculation of the final grade. The primary focus of the course is on the development of critical Latin reading skills.  In-class translations are as important as performance on formal written examinations in the calculation of the final grade.  There are two examinations, a mid-term and a final, which are comprised of translation and syntax analysis.
