****A note from Dr. Cheng Hsiao, President****

In closing the term as the president of the CEANA I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the officers of CEANA, in particular, the vice president, Professor Chihwa Kao and the treasurer/secretary, Professor Jenchi Cheng, for their dedicated service. The success of an association depends on the participation of all members. However, one of the strengths of the CEANA is that the Association has such dedicated officers who have substantially enriched our professional activities. Thank you all for your support to the Association and wish for you all a prosperous new year. I hope to see you all in our annual dinner scheduled on January 4, 1999.

 

****Officer Candidates****

 

President-elect: Dr. Kar-yiu Wong

Dr. Wong served two terms as Vice President of the Chinese Economic Association in North America in 1994-95, and was the organizer of several sessions for the CEANA at the Western Economic Association in 1993.

Dr. Wong received his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University in 1983 and is now a Full Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Washington.

Dr. Wong has made significant contributions to the field of international economics through his publications in the following journals: American Economic Review, European Economic Review, Economic Theory, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Review of International Economics, Japanese Economic Review, Journal of Economic Integration, Canadian Journal of Economics, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Macroeconomics, Defense Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, and Economics and Politics.

Dr. Wong also has had articles published in books such as: Increasing Returns and Economic Analysis (MacMillan, 1998), Dynamics, Economic Growth and International Trade (University of Michigan Press, 1997), Integrating the World Economy: Japanese Foreign Direct Investment, 1972-1990 (Stanford: Hoover Institute Press, 1996), The Gains from Trade and the Gains from Aid (Routledge, 1995), Migration: A Challenge for Europe (Tubingen: J. In 1995, Dr. Wong published his highly acclaimed book, International Trade in Goods and Factor Mobility (MIT Press, 1995), which was reprinted in 1997. The book is being translated into Japanese. Dr. Wong co-edited a book, Dynamics, Economic Growth and International Trade, published by the University of Michigan Press in 1997, and edited a manuscript on the Asian crisis this year.

In recent years, Dr. Wong has been a co-organizer of many international conferences such as: "Dynamics, Economic Growth and International Trade, IV" to be held in Tilburg in July 1999; "The Asian Crisis: The Economics Front" to be held in Seattle in December 1998; "Dynamics, Economic Growth and International Trade, III" in Taiwan, August 1998; "International Trade, Factor Mobility and Asia" in Hong Kong, July 1998; "Dynamics, Economic Growth and International Trade, II" in Hong Kong, July 1997; "Economic Growth in Open Economies" in Hong Kong, December 1996; and "Dynamics, Economic Growth and International Trade" in Helsingor, Denmark, August 1996.

Dr. Wong is currently a guest editor of the Review of International Economics and the Review of Development Economics, and has been appointed as an editor of the Review of International Economics and an associate editor of the Pacific Economic Review.

Dr. Wong is married and has one child.

 

 

Vice-President: Dr. K.C. (Kwok-Chiu) Fung

Dr. K. C. Fung is a Professor and Director of the Ph.D. Program in the Department of Economics at University of California-Santa Cruz. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Asia/Pacific Research Center, Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1984.

Dr. Fung has published extensively in various journals such as International Economic Review, Journal of International Economics, Canadian Journal of Economics, European Economic Review, Oxford Economic Papers, etc .

Dr. Fung’s professional experience includes Senior Staff Economist, Council of Economic Advisers, Bush and Clinton White House; Consultant, the World Bank; Associate Director, Hong Kong Centre for Economic Research, University of Hong Kong; Invited Lecturer, Nankai University, PRC; Visiting Scholar, University of Tokyo, Japan; Visiting Researcher, Tilburg University, Netherlands; Visiting Scholar, Chung-hua Institution for Economic Research, Taiwan; Member, Editorial Council, Review of International Economics; Member, PECC, Trade Policy Committee, Hong Kong; U.S. Delegate to OECD, etc.

Jen-Chi Cheng is a Chair and Associate Professor of Economics at Wichita State University. He received his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1989. His research interest is in open macroeconomics and he has published in various journals.

The Central Bank of China, located in Taipei, Taiwan, has vacancies for Economists. Applications to fill one to two full-time Economist positions are invited from candidates that fulfill the following criteria:

(1) A Ph.D. degree in Economics from a prestigious U.S., Canadian, or European university (obtained by July 1999 at the latest).

(2) Specialization in the fields of money and banking or macroeconomics and a high degree of familiarity with applied econometrics.

(3) Excellent research record and ability to conduct research independently.

All candidates should be R.O.C. citizens and should not hold dual nationality. All male candidates should have fulfilled their military service requirements.

Interested applicants who meet the above requirements are invited to apply before March 31, 1999 (based on the date of the postmark), by submitting the following documents:

(a) A photocopy of the candidates National I.D. card or R.O.C. passport

(b) Bi-lingual English & Chinese Curriculum Vitae (one copy).

(c) Ph.D. degree certificate or a course advisor’s letter showing that such a certificate can be obtained before July 1999.

(d) Course transcripts (one copy).

(e) A copy of the Ph.D. dissertation or any publications or papers representative of the candidate’s research work.

(f) Three letters of reference (at least one referee should reside in Taiwan).

Only those candidates who submit the necessary documents will be informed as to whether they have been shortlisted. All candidates should obtain their Ph.D. certificate by July 31, 1999 at the latest, otherwise the application will no longer be considered. An annual salary of around NT$1 million excluding bonuses will be paid to the right candidates.

The Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica, Taiwan ROC is seeking to fill several research economist positions beginning August 1999. We will consider all qualified candidates in all areas and at all ranks. Junior candidates should have a Ph.D. by July 1999 as well as evidence of research promise. Candidates for senior positions should have a Ph.D. and an excellent research record. Candidates who speak Chinese are preferred.

The Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica, is the highest academic institution in Taiwan. It offers excellent research facilities and support, including paid leaves of absence for research and study abroad. Its research staff enjoys complete freedom when conducting research but does not have teaching obligations.

The deadline for application is March 31, 1999. Applications received before the deadline will be decided sequentially. Chinese Economic Association in North America (CEANA) is organizing several sessions at the conferences of the International Atlantic Economic Society, Western Economic Association, Southern Economic Association, and Allied Social Science Associations. Members and nonmembers are invited to submit papers for presentation and/or serve as discussants and chairs in these sessions. In presentation, please observe the following conditions:

  1. Each submission of the paper must be accompanied by a submission fee of US$20 unless at least one of the authors is a member of the association. In the latter case, please indicate which author is a member.
  2. Multiple submissions by the same authors to the same conference are not encouraged.

3. Please send three copies of an abstract or a paper to the organizer no later than the deadline noted below:

The 1999 Taipei International Conference on Efficiency and Productivity Growth, Taipei, Taiwan

July 30 – 31, 1999

The 1999 Taipei International Conference on Efficiency and Productivity Growth will be held on Friday and Saturday, July 30-31, 1999, in Taipei, Taiwan. This is the second international conference on efficiency and productivity growth in the Asia-Pacific region organized and sponsored by the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica (IEAS).

The conference will consist of both invited and contributed paper sessions on efficiency and productivity growth. The Conference Organizing Committee prefers contributed papers addressing efficiency and productivity growth in the Asian-Pacific region, but other theoretical and empirical contributions are also welcome. Authors of papers presented at the conference are encouraged to submit to the conference volume to be edited by IEAS and published by Edward Elgar Publishing Limited. The volume from the 1997 conference, Economic Efficiency and Productivity Growth in the Asia Pacific Region, edited by Tsu-tan Fu, Cliff J. Huang, and C. A. Knox Lovell, is to be released in November 1998 by Edward Elgar Publishing.

Those wishing to contribute a paper are invited to submit a one-page abstract as soon as possible but not later than January 15, 1999, to the conference coordinator, Dr. Tsu-tan Fu. The conference program will consist of 50 to 60 presentations selected from the submitted abstracts. Completed manuscripts for those accepted are due by May 20, 1999. Limited financial support may be available for paper contributors. Those applying for financial aid must submit their completed manuscripts by April 20, 1999.

Lodging will be at the Academia Sinica Guest Hotel located on the campus of the Academia Sinica. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided to all participants. A reception will be held on the evening of July 30 at the Guest Hotel.

Dr. Chang Han-ju has passed away on October 29 at age 85. He was a Professor at National Taiwan University and taught History of Economic Thoughts.
