1480: Spanish Inquisition begins.

1483-1542: Cardinal Gasparo Contarini.

1537: Leads commission on church reform (consilium de emendanda).

1541: Attends Regensburg Colloquy, an unsuccessful attempt to reach common ground between Catholics and Protestants.

1491-1556: Ignatius Loyola.

1540: Founds Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

1506-1552: Francis Xavier, Jesuit missionary in China and Japan.

1515-1582: Teresa of Avila, Spanish mystic.
