HST 301, CONSTRUCTING IDENTITY: ETHNICITY, GENDER AND RELIGION IN THE ANCIENT WORLD
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBSCRIBING TO E-MAIL DISCUSSION GROUP:
In order to send and receive messages on "identity", each of you must first subscribe. If you've been on subscription-based email discussion lists before, the procedure is pretty much the same. Send a message to the address listserv@listserv.syr.edu -- NOT to the "identity" address -- and in the body of the message write:
subscribe identity Your Name
It's being read by a computer, not a person, so you have to do it exactly as shown. You should, within a minute, get back an automatic response telling you that you need to "confirm" your subscription. Do so by replying to that message with "ok" as the text of your message. Then you'll get another set of automatic messages acknowledging your subscription and giving lots of instructions; save those for future reference.
At that point, you will be subscribed. Any message you send to identity@syr.edu will be forwarded to all the other subscribers, and you will receive everyone else's postings as regular email in your own account.
Note: they've set it up by default that you won't receive a copy of the message you just posted to the list, even though everyone else will see it. If, like me, you trust these automatic systems about as far as you could comfortably throw a server, you might prefer to change that option so that you can see that the message you just sent actually did get posted. To do that, send the following command to listserv@listserv.syr.edu:
set identity repro
And that way the sender will also get a copy of whatever he/she posts.

Further instructions
: everything you could ever possibly want to know about listserv. If you run into any problems, get your postings bounced back with weird error messages or anything like that, then send your comment to me at jmgaddis@maxwell.syr.edu and I'll post it for you and we can sort out any difficulties over the weekend.
Have fun with these (I won't be grading you on what you say) and don't be shy!
