897: "Cadaver Synod" in Rome: a dead pope is exhumed and put on trial by his successor.
909: Foundation of monastery at Cluny. By 1000, there are 30 Cluniac monasteries; by 1100, there are 600.
955-964: Pope John XII, allegedly stricken dead while committing adultery.
c.975: "Peace of God" movement begins in France.
999-1003: Gerbert of Aurillac, Pope Sylvester II.
