Simulation Design OverviewThis workshop on Simulation Design for Conflict Analysis focuses on the design of simulations that can be used for conflict resolution. Students registering for this workshop receive a package of readings on the design and implementation of simple simulations, as well as a participant handbook for SIIRAN, a simulation of tripartite negotiations over international oil leases in Siiran, a small, oil-rich country in the Middle East. At the first meeting teams representing the Wilson Petroleum Company and Advantec Petrochemical International negotiate oil leases with the new government of Siiran. At the end of the game, after the de-briefing, the workshop covers the design of simulations, including the theory, the rules, the representation of variables, and uses of simulations in a policy setting. During the next part of the workshop, students design and implement their own conflict resolution simulations. Workshop Agenda and FormatBefore the workshop, you will receive a package of
background readings. In the first session you will participate in a
simulation of international negotiation. The workshop continues with a focus
on the design and implementation of simple policy simulations. During the
second session, you will work with other class members to design your own
simulation. In the third session, you will run your simulation, de-brief the
players, and discuss applications. Your work will be evaluated by two
academic specialists. Workshop OutcomesProfessional training in:Simulation in NGO management. Simulation Design for Conflict Analysis will be offered by Matt Bonham, International Relations Political Science, and Jim Roberts, Towson University. |
