Which Measurement Matters? Developing Better Measures of Organizational
Performance and NGO Ranking
NGOs are under increasing pressure to demonstrate their effectiveness and
accountability. Yet metrics like overhead ratios or project outputs don’t
meaningfully measure the impact — positive or negative — that NGOs have on the
complex problems they address. Effective performance measurement systems should
help NGOs achieve greater social impact and be more accountable to the
communities they serve. This panel will explore the potential for NGOs,
academics and rating agencies to work together on more meaningful measures of
performance and impact.
