Preparing for the Changing Health Care Environment
The health care industry in America is in a rapid stage of change as pressure to
reduce costs and enhance quality heightens. The fee-for-service system of
independent providers we have been accustomed to is moving toward more globally
financed networks of practitioners and organizations. Consumers are becoming
more involved in their own care, and technology is changing the way care is
delivered. These changes create new challenges and opportunities for managers
and public policy makers. The health care professionals responsible for managing
this change will play a large part in determining how successful the health care
system will be in terms of access, cost, and quality in the future.
We believe that the individuals who will be best prepared for the challenges of
the changing health care environment will have a multidisciplinary perspective.
We believe that such a perspective requires a multi-professional approach to
these issues. The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, in
association with Syracuse University's School of Management, the College of Law,
and the College of Human Services and Health Professions, has created a dynamic
and practical program in Health Services Management and Policy to provide this
multidisciplinary experience. Students can complete a plan of study, including
approved courses from these participating schools and colleges, designed to
bring clinical, business, legal, and social work professionals together with
current and future public administrators to discuss health care policy and
management in this changing environment.
