Coursework for the HSMP Certificate
Requirements for the Certificate include two core courses offered through the Maxwell School, at least two electives selected from approved courses offered by the Maxwell School or by participating schools and colleges within the University,
and a capstone experience.
Required Courses
- PPA 783 The Changing American Health Care System examines current structural change in the American health care system. The evolution of the organizations (Hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, etc.) and the people (physicians, nurses, social workers, etc.) making up the system and their relationships is studied. The ways that these organizations and people change in response to an environment of integrated delivery systems, managed care, and fundamental restructuring of financing systems are explored. (Fall)
- PPA 782 Health Care Management is designed to identify tools and approaches required for successful management of health care organizations in a changing environment. Particular emphasis is placed on building the skills necessary to manage the interorganizational dependencies inherent in the movement away from delivery and financing of discrete programs toward integrated delivery systems. (Spring)
Electives
A broad array of other courses is available for students enrolled in the Certificate program, including offerings in such subject areas as health and social policy, health law, demography, management, and economics.
Capstone Experience
A capstone experience under the supervision of the HSMP program advisor must be completed. The experience may be a research paper or a supervised field experience that concludes with the development of a written paper.
