Research

My research agenda largely focuses on applied and theoretical micro-econometrics. Read all about it in my publications. Some of my research has involved understanding and developing ways to measure technical or production efficiency.  Lately I've been doing research with Kurt Schnier (University of Rhode Island) on U.S. fishery production.  In particular, we have an NSF grant to study risk in the Bering Sea Crab Fisheries.  The ultimate goal is to estimate the value of a statistical life using a policy instrument. The exploits of Bering Sea crab fishermen have been popularized in the Discovery Channel show The Deadliest Catch.  Read the NSF grant abstract.  In February, 2008 we made a trip to Dutch Harbor, Alaska to learn about the fishery.  Read the trip blog.  I am also working with Jeff Perloff (Cal. Berkeley) on the theoretical and empirical effects of brand variety on product demand and consumer surplus. Fun stuff!  Lastly, I am working on a deconvolution estimator with Chris Parmeter (Virginia Tech).
